Even though research studies have reported progress on developing a hormonal male contraceptive, Food and Drug Administration approval isn’t likely to happen soon, Kaplan said.

“The average amount of time of initiation of a drug to marketing it is seven to 10 years,” Kaplan said.

And even if researchers develop the male pill and it receives FDA approval, no one knows for certain whether men would use the pill en masse the way women have accepted the method.

“I think in 2006, young, sexually active men are certainly much more open to participating in contraception then they were 20 to 30 years ago,” Kaplan said.
