Celiac Disease Increases Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Risk... M. Luisa Mearin from Leiden University Medical Center, The Netherlands and colleagues investigated the frequency of celiac disease in two large European populations, one consisting of patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and another representing controls. Among patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, 1.2% had celiac disease, the authors report. In comparison, celiac disease was found in 0.5% of the controls. Patients with celiac disease had a 2.6-fold increased risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma after adjustment for age and sex differences, the results indicate. This increased risk for non-Hodgkin lymphoma was only present in patients whose celiac disease was clinically diagnosed before the study, the researchers note, and not in patients with silent celiac disease detected by screening for the study itself. The odds of small bowel lymphoma (T-cell type) in patients with celiac disease were estimated to be 28 times higher than for other localizations. "Patients with celiac disease have a significantly increased risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma, but the association is lower than previously thought," the authors conclude. "Celiac disease is mainly associated with T-cell small-bowel lymphoma, but this in general is a rare condition."
