In the organised food sector, many food manufacturing companies are aware of the threat, so most of them subject their raw materials to mycotoxin analyses.

Ideally, this practice should be mandatory.

But the informal food producers do not consider it to be an essential process.

How can the informal sector be carried along?

It could be a three way approach.

I want to commend government on what is being done in respect of HIV/AIDS and tobacco.

This same level of interest by government should be shown to mycotoxins in food - particularly our local food processing.

It is necessary that we disseminate our information freely, clearly and regularly to appropriate authorities who in turn can reach people at the grassroots level.

What’s the latest on the A mycotoxin study group launched recently at Babcock University?

After the launching, an ad hoc committee was mandated to deliberate the issues of membership, awareness, and diseases associated with mycotoxins in Nigeria.

The committee, together with scientists, agric personnel, businessmen, government officials, traders will be contacted to be in attendance at the next national meeting in International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, coming up in April 2006.
