Serono May Seek Acquisitions, Fails to Find a Buyer (Update1)... The company generates three-quarters of its sales from the multiple-sclerosis medicine Rebif, which was first sold in 1998, and fertility drug Gonal-f, the first biological copy of a follicle-stimulating hormone, that was approved for sale in 1995. Rebif faces competition from new oral treatments as well as Elan Corp.'s Tysabri, which may return to the market in coming months. The drugmaker has been buying products to revive growth and move into new disease areas such as oncology and dermatology. It acquired rights to Genentech Inc. and Xoma Ltd.'s psoriasis therapy Raptiva outside the U.S. and Asia and experimental cancer drugs from companies including Genmab A/S and Rigel Pharmaceuticals Inc. Drug Disappointments Some of the drugs the company bought as well as those it developed weren't successful. Serono dropped the development of
psoriasis treatment onercept and melanoma drug Canvaxin in April
2005 and government investigation. It pleaded guilty to
conspiracy charges for the promotion of AIDS drug Serostim,
which generated sales of $70.4 million in 2005.

p... Nepal women hail divorce ruling... 'Progressive' The latest court verdict has come in a series of what rights activists have praised as progressive judgments by the Supreme Court. Last December the court asked the government to scrap a "discriminatory" rule that women must ask permission of family members before selling inherited property. The court also eased the regulations for women to obtain passports and ruled that women should not suffer discrimination during the menstruation cycle. The court also asked the government not to recruit underage boys into the security forces. It said the recruitment contravened the country's constitution and international children's rights treaties that Nepal had signed.
