Looking younger doesn't mean more fertile

...The women frequently turn to Chinese medicine when they fail to fall pregnant and then delay for another two or three years before seeking IVF help, says gynaecologist and Dr Kan co-authored a report based on a study of 185 first-generation Asian immigrants and 540 non-Asian women over a four-year period.

The other co-authors were Dr Peter Leung and Dr Leanne Tan, of IVF Australia, and Professor Michael Chapman, head of the School of Women's and Children's Health at the University of NSW and also with IVF Australia.

Aged between 32 and 44, Asian women were, on average, at least two years older than women of non-Asian descent when they sought treatment.

Dr Kan said it was first thought the drugs for IVF catered towards Caucasians because they were developed in Europe and not designed for the smaller build of Asian women and how they metabolised the drugs.

"But we noticed that there was a difference in the pregnancy rates, and the Asians were not getting pregnant as quickly or as easily as the Caucasian patients when they underwent IVF," Dr Kan said.

"Asians in Australia have been told repeatedly that they looked younger than the general population and therefore they have time to play with, also there were a lot of traditional Chinese herbal medicines they could turn to before they turned to IVF," he said.
