Sceptic Alex has a stab at acupuncture

...She can even induce labour.

Although acupuncture is not generally available on the NHS, more and more doctors are suggesting it as an option for patients, although most of Irina's patients are self-referred.

She said: "Many doctors are having training in acupuncture.

I think that speaks volumes.

"Most doctors will not object to patients having acupuncture, provided they are satisfied the person providing acupuncture is appropriately qualified." Last year, Irina was invited to give a presentation at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, on the use of acupuncture for treating low back pain, to orthopaedic surgeons and consultants, osteopaths, physiotherapists and chiropractors of the East Anglian Spinal Club.

Acupuncture has been treating back pain and many other conditions for around 5,000 years in China and other Eastern countries.

According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the body's motivating energy, known as Qi (pronounced chi.) This energy supposedly moves in a smooth and balanced way through a series of meridians, or channels, beneath the skin.

The flow of Qi can be disturbed by a number of factors, including anxiety, stress, grief, anger, poor nutrition, weather conditions, hereditary factors, infections, poisons and injury.

Fine needles, inserted into the channels of energy, stimulate the body's own healing response and help to restore its natural balance.

Celiac Disease Increases Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Risk

...Earlier studies have estimated a 30- to 40-fold increased risk of enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma.Dr.

M.

Luisa Mearin from Leiden University Medical Center, The Netherlands and colleagues investigated the frequency of celiac disease in two large European populations, one consisting of patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and another representing controls.

Among patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, 1.2% had celiac disease, the authors report.

In comparison, celiac disease was found in 0.5% of the controls.

Patients with celiac disease had a 2.6-fold increased risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma after adjustment for age and sex differences, the results indicate. This increased risk for non-Hodgkin lymphoma was only present in patients whose celiac disease was clinically diagnosed before the study, the researchers note, and not in patients with silent celiac disease detected by screening for the study itself.

The odds of small bowel lymphoma (T-cell type) in patients with celiac disease were estimated to be 28 times higher than for other localizations.

"Patients with celiac disease have a significantly increased risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma, but the association is lower than previously thought," the authors conclude.

"Celiac disease is mainly associated with T-cell small-bowel lymphoma, but this in general is a rare condition." SOURCE:Eur J Gastroenterol Hepatol ...
