Pop cultre breifs... On Sept. 5, Classic Media will release a $22 two-disc set devoted to the mutant dinosaur that includes - for the first time in the USA - the complete, uncut 1954 Japanese film "Gojira" and the revised 1956 U.S. version, "Godzilla: King of the Monsters."Both films have been remastered in high-definition and widescreen format. "Gojira" includes 40 minutes that were edited from the U.S. version.The studio plans to include extras such as a commentary about the historical significance of the film. "It was really not meant to be a major monster movie. It was more of a political movie with strong anti-nuclear messaging," Classic's Robert Mayo says. On the same date, Classic will reissue six other remastered "Godzilla" films (both Japanese and U.S. versions) in a $70 DVD set. - Mike Snider, GNSTelevisionPivotal days ready for a close-upThe History Channel has gathered 10 well-regarded filmmakers to make 10 documentaries about "10 Days That Unexpectedly Changed America." Bob Johnson, a Lee’s Summit Republican, offered an amendment that deleted “If we don’t allow for contraception for low-income women, we will have more unplanned pregnancies and more pregnancies ended by abortion,” Johnson said. “No one here wants more abortions.”
He drew support from Rep. Rob Schaaf, a St. Joseph Republican and a family doctor. Schaaf said contraceptives were a basic part of medical care and should be covered. Johnson’s proposal was defeated 100-53, with nearly all Republicans and a handful of Democrats voting against the change. The House then took up Phillips’ amendment. Rep. Melba Curls, a Kansas City Democrat, asked how Republicans could vote to block access to contraceptives after last year’s dramatic cuts in Medicaid and other social services. “Not all the low-income women who will get pregnant will have abortions,” Curls said. “If you have the baby, you’re still low-income.
